Calcium Carbide Market Review: Nine Key Import Markets in Africa, the Middle East and the Americas

A calcium carbide factory's view of import trends across Africa, the Middle East and the Americas.

Large imports do not necessarily mean a market is growing. That is what stands out to us in the United Nations trade figures for 2023–2024. We make calcium carbide, and we are sharing this review with importers, distributors and acetylene producers who want to keep track of trade in the markets they serve.

For each region, we have taken the three biggest importers in the available 2024 records. The source is UN Comtrade, under HS 284910. The comparisons and comments are ours. Quantities are in metric tonnes, and Egypt appears only in the Middle East section so that it is not counted twice. These are import figures, not total consumption.

Africa: South Africa Deserves Greater Attention

South Africa's increase catches the eye first. Nigeria, though, is still almost the same size after a steep fall. For people trading here, that shift between countries says more than describing the whole of Africa as a growing or shrinking market.

Country 2023 Imports (tonnes) 2024 Imports (tonnes) Year-on-Year Change
South Africa 3,957.4 6,217.1 +57.1%
Nigeria 8,856.3 6,177.2 −30.3%
Senegal 1,171.7 1,086.8 −7.3%

South Africa: Another 2,259.7 tonnes put the country just ahead of Nigeria. That is quite a change in annual purchases. If buying continues at that higher level, the increase will be more useful as a guide to future supply needs.

Nigeria: The fall was 30.3%. Even so, more than 6,100 tonnes came into the country. Neither fact should be overlooked. Companies already doing business there can set their own customers' order changes against the national figures to judge whether the market is recovering or contracting.

Senegal: Imports stayed above 1,000 tonnes, with a much smaller decline than Nigeria's. A useful question for local distributors is how this slight reduction fits with the way their customers usually replenish stock.

There is no single African trend in these numbers. South Africa bought considerably more, Nigeria much less, and Senegal a little less. To get beyond those changes and understand the reasons, a closer look at the local customer base is needed.

The Middle East: Saudi Arabia Is Closing the Gap

Saudi Arabia is what makes this comparison interesting. Türkiye is still in first place, but there is very little between them now. Egypt hardly moved by comparison: its imports were at much the same level in both years.

Country 2023 Imports (tonnes) 2024 Imports (tonnes) Year-on-Year Change
Türkiye 5,943.2 5,735.4 −3.5%
Saudi Arabia 4,529.1 5,591.5 +23.5%
Egypt 2,354.7 2,307.0 −2.0%

Türkiye: Imports of 5,735.4 tonnes remained after the small dip. There is still a considerable amount of purchasing here. From the perspective of local carbide buyers and distributors, this is a normal fluctuation in the figures.

Saudi Arabia: Imports added 1,062.4 tonnes. A gap of about 1,414 tonnes behind Türkiye became just 144 tonnes. That is the reason to take a closer look at Saudi Arabia in a regional review. Whether future orders will sustain the higher level is something to watch.

Egypt: The country imported 2,307.0 tonnes after a fall of 2.0%. We think "relatively stable" describes it well.

Saudi Arabia is catching up, then, while Türkiye and Egypt still account for sizeable volumes. There is also the shipping situation to consider. Since the U.S.–Iran conflict began in 2026, the effect of Hormuz on shipping has been hard to ignore. A carbide buyer now has as much reason to consider reliable delivery as price. Before an order is placed, the destination port, available sailing and the carrier's willingness to take calcium carbide all need checking.

The Americas: U.S. Growth Stands Out Among the Largest Markets

Only the United States bought more among these three countries. Canada still bought the most. Size and growth therefore tell different stories here. Keeping them separate gives people working in these markets a better way to read the figures.

Country 2023 Imports (tonnes) 2024 Imports (tonnes) Year-on-Year Change
Canada 7,973.8 6,729.6 −15.6%
United States 3,183.1 3,610.1 +13.4%
Argentina 2,118.7 2,043.9 −3.5%

Canada: Losing 1,244.2 tonnes was no small change. Nor is the remaining 6,729.6 tonnes a small market. Both belong in the discussion. Importers and distributors can use these figures to take another look at what has changed in purchasing.

United States: The extra imports came to 426.9 tonnes. Set that beside another figure: in 2024, the U.S. exported 6,740.9 tonnes of calcium carbide. It is a stable market with goods moving both in and out.

Argentina: After a 3.5% fall, imports were still above 2,000 tonnes. The change was mild next to Canada's. For companies serving Argentina, these figures suggest that most of the existing import base remains in place.

The Americas have their differences too: an increase in the U.S., a marked fall in Canada and a small decline in Argentina. These are useful points of reference when discussing the market. What a business actually orders still depends on its own orders, stock and delivery needs.
